Chapter 1- Cardboard Material- SELECT CORRECT CARDBOARD MATERIAL- First step to custom packaging

Wooden strong dividers

Corrugated Fiberboard

Colors of Corrugated Fiberboard

  • Brown/Brown. Inside and outside brown color, able to print by Flexo printing, Offset printing or Silk Screenprinting.
  • White/Brown. One side brown and one side white (white paper can be Kraft paper or CCNB paper)
  • White/White. Double side white color (white paper can be Kraft paper or CCNB paper)
  • Full white. The corrugated liner also is white, this corrugated cardboard IS VIRGIN WHITE.
  • Full colored. Black, red, green or whatever you want, very few uses.

Thickness of Corrugated Fiberboard

  • A flute, 4mm thickness
  • B flute, 3mm thickness
  • C flute, 3.8mm thickness
  • E flute, 2mm thickness
  • F flute, 1mm thickness
  • AB flute, 7mm thickness
  • BE flute, 5mm thickness
  • EF flute, 3mm thickness
  • ABB flute, 10mm thickness
  • BEE flute, 7mm thickness
  • Some other special thickness corrugated fiberboard
GSM mean Grams per Square Meter, higher GSM means better quality. Corrugated cardboard GSM calculate the total number of each layer paper GSM. For example, a piece of corrugated cardboard made from 3 layer B flute, 170gsm/190gsm/200gsm, then the corrugated cardboard GSM is near 560gsm. (Ignore the flute layer more than it's paper gsm after get corrugated)

Printing on Corrugated Fiberboard

  • Offset printing
  • Flexographic printing
  • Screen printing

Printing Finish on Corrugated Fiberboard

Need the whole printed surface seems gloss or matt, and protect the printing ink. After all, it will make a good touch feel. Corrugated fiberboard boxes are examples of laminated structures, where an inner core provides rigidity and strength, and the outer layers provide a smooth surface. Laminating paper products, such as photographs, can prevent them from becoming creased, faded, water damaged, wrinkled, stained, smudged, abraded, or marked by grease or fingerprints. Photo identification cards and credit cards are almost always laminated with plastic film. Also, lamination is needed for further finish steps like UV varnishing, spot UV, hot foil stamping, as it is a good temper material to bear all kinds of heat and handling. To draw a conclusion, it is good to choose lamination for:

  • Away from dirt and dust.
  • Anti-Scratch.
  • Protection from fading and color changes.
  • Waterproof.
  • A professional quality look and feel.

It is a process that the oil being widely distributed on the printed surface. The aim is to prevent the printed paper from scratch and sticker with each other.

UV is short for ultraviolet, UV Varnish also called UV coating. A UV Varnish is a liquid coating which is applied to the surface of a plain surface (available in Glossy, Matt finish) which is then dried/cured with an ultraviolet light. It is to make the requested printed area showed up with an eye-catching effect. After UV varnishing, the surface will be thicker than uncoated area and seems glossy. If your package needs somewhere stand out of the printing, then spot UV is a good solution. It is always being used for LOGO, cartoon, text and so on. It is being proceeded after offset printing and surface finish (glossy or matt varnishing and lamination).

Hot foil stamping is a specialty printing process that applies heat, pressure, metal dies and foil film to the printed and finished CCNB, kraft paper, art paper and virgin paperboard. The foil comes in rolls in a wide assortment of colors, finishes, and optical effects. Metallic foil is most commonly seen today – particularly gold foil, silver foil, copper foil, and holographic metallic foils, available colors could be chosen from our color chart.

Embossing and debossing are the processes of creating either raised or recessed designs in paper cardboard and other materials. An embossed pattern is raised against the background, meanwhile, a debossed pattern is hollow into the surface of the paper cardboard.

Soft-touch film is anti-scratch and offer a soft touch feeling on your custom packaging

Made from layers of kraft paper and liner, using a corrugated machine to create different waves and laminate them together. Almost 80% of shipping boxes made from corrugated fiberboard, because it’s good to protect products or inner packagings.

Different kinds of Paperboard Material

It’s Kraft paper made from pulp, brown color or white color, quality can be 100gsm ~ 450gsm.

The finished product is boxes or paper bags, quality can be 230gsm ~ 400gsm.

Make to small boxes bags and printing items.

Some customer wants their packaging with natural textures or colors, specialty paperboard is a good choice. For example, a white paperboard printed with black color VS black paperboard, the black paperboard seems more natural and paper reams are wholly black. Texture can be selected or from your design idea.

Clay coated paperboard always used to be laminated on corrugated fiberboard to do nice color box offset printed, but it also can be made to a box itself. Yes, need to be high gsm to make a box, otherwise will not able to hold much weight. gsm from 250 to 450. Any printing and any printing finish.

Ivory Paperboard boxes

For different package use, Paperboard can diverse into Kraft paperboard, Virgin paperboard, Art paperboard, Specialty paperboard and CCNB paperboard.

colourful art paper

Glossy and smooth, used for producing paper bags, rigid cardboard gift boxes, magazine printing and paper manual printing.

clay coated news back paper CCNB paper

CCNB, used for the small paper box, coated with corrugated fiberboard to make the color printed box, also called Grey board or white lined chipboard.

kraft paper card stock

Widely used in corrugated fiberboard producing, or directly make it into Kraft paper boxes. Also, some customer selects it for the paper bag.

white virgin paperboard ivory board

Also called the virgin paper, use for cosmetic packaging boxes, perfume packaging boxes and small device box packaging.

Customized rigid box made from duplex board

Rigid cardboard

Different kinds of Rigid Cardboard Material

  • Grey Duplex board

Double side grey, laminate with printed art paperboard, recycled material.

  • Duplex board white back

One side grey and another side white color, recycled material.

  • HDF/MDF board

High-density fiberboard/Medium-density fiberboard, used for heavy duty gift box for heavy items. For example, HDF-made gift box for tooling.

HDF/MDF board

High-Density Fiberboard (HDF) also called Hardboard, it’s a higher dense grade of MDF (Medium density fiberboard). It is way much stronger than other Fiberboard or cardboard. It is made from recycled wood fibers and resin, consists of 82% wood fiber, 9% urea-formaldehyde resin glue, 8% water, and 1% paraffin wax.

duplex board

Duplex Rigid Board

Uncoated duplex board, two sides grey color, used for rigid gift boxes.

Duplex white back

Duplex Rigid Board White Back

Coated duplex paperboard, one side is pure white, used for luxury packaging boxes.

About the Chapter One

The different paper material has the different way of using, but they also can be laminated with each other to get a new material. Such as 2 pieces 250gsm virgin paperboard laminated, then 500gsm virgin paperboard come out. Art paper coated with the duplex board, then it is a nice rigid material, with printing, it could be made into rigid cardboard gift boxes. High-density board coated with specialty paper, add the printing, it would be very solid gift box, and also unique with the special texture. For More details, Please Click Below link.
